Invite your client into the project once it is ready, with access to the work they need to see and nothing they should not.

What
Decide what your client can see, make internal items private, then invite your client contacts as client users.
Why
Clients can follow progress, comment and approve work in one place, instead of over email.
Who
Project managers and project administrators. Inviting new people to the site may need a site administrator.

This is step 5 of 7 in the Project Manager onboarding path. About 15 minutes.

Bring your client in

1. Decide what your client should see

Client users can see the project items you share with them, and can add comments, reply to messages, upload files, complete tasks and create tasks or milestones. They cannot see project profitability, manage the project's people, or use site-wide areas such as reports, templates and planning.

Before inviting anyone, decide which task lists, files, messages and notebooks are internal only.

2. Make internal items private

Set privacy on anything your client should not see, such as internal notes, estimates or internal task lists.

3. Invite your client contacts

  1. Go to People and select Invite users.
  2. Enter each contact's name and email address.
  3. Select the client's company, and choose Client user as the user type.
  4. Select this project, then send the invites.

Each client user can be added to up to five active projects.

4. Check their project permissions

  1. Open the project's people settings and review what each client user can do.
  2. Leave budget permissions off unless you want the client to see the budget.

5. Welcome them

Post a short message in the project to welcome your client, explain how you will share updates and point them to the Client User onboarding path.

Done when

  • Internal items in the project are private.
  • Your client contacts are invited as client users and added to the project.
  • You have posted a welcome message.

Next step: Step 6: Track progress and keep everyone updated.
